    I got the same answer. We were supposed to find the value of the 85th percentile by linear interpolation formula.

    Is it necessary to write everything in the spaces provided to us and if we write a few words outside the line do the examiners still award marks for points.

    U are right the the question did clearly say total mass. So the answer for the mean would be previous answer plus the mass of empty tins. The s.d. would be the same as it is unaffected by addition.
