You always must think of what had reacted, what had formed, and what is/are left at equilibrium. Labelling these in your work helps you to do the book-keeping tidily. Watch some of my tutorial videos on how to get through equilibrium constant problems and apply the relevant concepts to these Jim Clark's examples. The ideas all start from that basic application of mole concepts and thinking about my very first sentence in this reply.
