When the summer heat is intense in the Thar desert, people living in the desert area build sandgloo's and sand caves to shelter themselves. It makes it hard to grow rice crops in the summer so they grow catuses with the use of sled dogs with sleighs to cover the long desert distances.
Various salty lakes are located in the desert and soil of the desert temsin dry out ; to control the desertification process various protected areas. Agriculture and rearing of cattle is the main occupation of the people. Overgrazing by the cattle has created the depletion of the soil fodder trees are also grown.
