Wanted to know whether Graphite is an ELEMENT or a COMPOUND?????

graphite is element. it is a form of carbon.(other type of carbon is diamond).

Its an allotrope* of carbon.

* When an element like carbon, exists in several natural forms, each form is called an allotrope.
as Diamond and Graphite are both made up of carbon atoms only, so they can't be called compounds

i guess its because of the so much difference in the two types of carbon. so its better to use separate names for them
