Verse of the Throne (2:255)
(a)Main theme:
Theme of this long verse is God in Himself. Its a verse of Sura al-Baqara,a Madinian Sura.It begins with the expression of the Shahada(declaration of oneness of God) and then elaborates various aspects of unity of God that make him matchless. God is free from all weaknesses and limitations, has perfect knowledge of all times,is not dependent on anyone for His survival and enjoys autonomy in exercising His authority. His authority and His rule encompass the entire universe. This makes God not only unique, but also elevates Him to heights we just can't imagine and that is mentioned in The Quran as:" then He established Himself on the Throne."(10:3,13:2)
(b)Distinctive theme:
The passage presents the theme of absolutely supreme attributes of God,His eternal glory, majesty and His sovereignity. It proves Him superior to the created world. All creatures have a limited span of life and energies but God,being immortal,is free from any need of rest or nourishment because " He it is who feeds all but is not fed"(6:14). He sustains Himself as well as His universe without any fatigue or assistance.Several Verses mention God's omniscience(2:283, 7:7, 9:278, 57:4),omnipotence (2:20, 3:26) and sublime nature(112 and 6:103) but this passage sums up His unique attributes by using the words "Throne", "Everliving" and "Self Subsisting". Thus it eliminates any possibility of polytheism(shirk).
