how to determine dependent and independent variable?

The independent variable is the variable which YOU CONTROL to cause a change in the dependent variable, it is plotted on the X axis .
while the dependent variable is WHAT WE GET as we Change the independent variable , its plotted on the Y axis ..

independent variable can cause when there is no order on them for e.g changing with time.

but

Dependent variable are those who depends on change for e.g changing with weather.

for graphs

Whatever your changing, put on the x axis and whatever your measuring on the y -axis, done.
