The C=C bond in the alkene is broken completely. The -OH groups in the diol formed initially (when oxidised cold KMnO4) are further oxidised to ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids or carbon dioxide gas. The actual product depends on what is bonded to the carbon atoms involved in the C=C bond.

1. If a carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms we get oxidation to a CO2 molecule:
CH2=CH2 ---> CO2 + CO2

2. If a carbon atom is bonded to one hydrogen atom and one alkyl group we get oxidation to a -COOH (carboxylic acid) group:
CHR=CHR ---> RCOOH + RCOOH

3. If a carbon atom is bonded to two alkyl groups we get oxidation to a C=O (ketone) group.
