M/J 200 Q 21 (b). The graph is an exponential function graph. The value of 'k' is where it cuts the y-axis. Which you can see from the graph, is 0.5. use the point (1,1.5) "it lies on the line". Substitute the value of K into the equation and then put in this point. You get: 1.5=0.5a^1 a^1=a 1.5/0.5 = 3 so a = 3.

(and no you will not be required you use logs anywhere in D-Maths).

May/June 2006. P1 Q10 (a). 7 x 5 = 35 so it cannot be 5. 7 x 6 = 42 Yes. k=6. This is because firstly any integer doesn't have a decimal value. It must be a whole number. Secondly it must be either equal or greater than 36. So, the possible value is 6.

Q 16 (b) This question about the upper bound is quite common. Just remember a rule if it asks for the upper bound then see the degree of accuracy given in the question (in this case nearest centimeter) the original value is also in cm. So, all you have to do is to 1/2 =0.5 and add to the value given in the question= 50 +0.5 = 50.5.

(ii) The perimeter of a rectangle is given by 2(a+b). The least possible perimeter will be when we use the lower bound's for both the length and the width. (By common sense). Length = 49.5 (this time we subtract 0.5 to get the lower bound). Width = 15 - 0.5 = 14.5 Now put it into the formula 2(49.5 + 14.5) and you get 128 cm.

Q 25 (f) The line of symmetry is through B. So, the point exactly below B and directly in front of A lies on the line of symmetry such that you have a right angle triangle ABT (try making it out to make it clear). Now lets call that point T. T has coordinates (4,2) 4 because it shares the same x-coordinate as B. And 2 because it shares the same y coordinate as A. Apply cosine rule for the right angle triangle. Length of AT= 3(use formula for distance). Length of AB= 5 (already found in part b). Cosine = base/hypotenuse so we have Cos BAT = 3/5. Now, we also know that cos A = - cos (180-A) . So all you have to do is to attach the - sign with your value. Hence, cos DAB = - 3/5. (Remember this short-cut as such questions are quite common).

Hope that solves your problems.
