Since the Mughal Emperor was Muslim and he was the main figurehead during the war, British considered the War of Independence predominantly a Muslim revolt. Besides, it was also only Islam which was binding the people together and was the only cause for which the Muslims were united to work for. They wanted to restore the power of Mughal Emperor and the glory of Muslims. Thus, the only strong opposition and coordinated response against the British came from Muslims. When the war was over, British wanted to ensure that Muslims were put in a position that they would not be able to rise in revolt again. Therefore, they took strong measures against the Muslims after the war.
