How often are high profile elections won by political aids rather than politicians themselves? I would say that the political aids determined the 2008 presidential election. Hillary Clinton was held back by her people, Republicans often seem to have some hiccups in that regard, and Obama's political aids are some of the best the Democrats have to offer
