When connected as in diagram 1, both springs share the load. Suppose load is X newtons. The load acting on each spring is actually X/2 newtons, half of the load.

When connected as in diagram 2, the whole load acts on each spring. So the load on each spring will be X now. The load doubles, so the extension of each spring doubles i.e 2x extension of each spring. Total extension = 2x into 2 = 4x.

bt in q it says : x on each spring, so wont the load be 2x??

the answer is D

coz thsi simple rule could be applied that if there are 'n' springs then the extension produced in the series one would
be 'n^2' times the extension produced in the parallel arrangement....

hope this worked
