Two events are mutually exclusive if:
P(A and B) = 0

For two independent events:
P(A and B)=P(A) X P(B)

Also in words we can say that two events are said to be mutually exclusive if the occurence of one event automatically implies the non-occurence of the other event like for example when a 2-sided fair coin is tossed, the occurence of a head/tail will automatically cancel out the probability of the other side coming....!

And for the independent events we can say that two events are said to be independent in which the occurence of one event doesnot affect the occurence of the other. for example the probability of getting a 6 first time a fair die is thrown is totally independent of the probability of getting a 6 again the second time the die is thrown...!
