vernier caliper

assalam alaikum!
i just wanted to confirm that when measuring any thing with caliper, we do like this: value on main scale *plus* no. of divisions on vernier scale into 0.005.... and error in vernier caliper is 0.005 or 0.01 cm ??????? help plz...
