CAN U PLZ EXPLAIN ALL THESE IN DETAIL...especially with particular reference to plant cells..as in nov 2003 P1 q7. WHEN A PLANT CELL IS PLACED IN DISTILLED WATER WAT CHANGES OCCUR to its solute, pressure and water potential....and wat do u mean by plant tissue having same solute potential as a solution..

well i use the formula.
water potential = solute potential + pressure potential

so as the solute potenial is equal to the water potential of the cell use
prsre pot = water pot - sol pot
that will give zero =)

in q7, the answer is D because it has the cell has the same solute potential as a solution. Okay, first you need to understand what pressure, water and solute potential mean.
Water potential = solute potential + pressure potential.
Water potential is the measure of the tendency of water molecules to move from place to place. It's more negative when there is less water in the cell than outside.
Solute potential is the measure of the tendency of solute molecules to move from place to place.
Pressure potential is directly related to water potential because the greater the pressure potential, the more the tendency for water to leave the cell.
If you place a plant cell in distilled water, the water potential will less negative and the pressure potential will increase.

pressure is greater at a place, water potential increases.
solute potential is solute ki concentration in a region.
n water potential is water ki concentration. :)
