whn ur sad.... u suffer a loss.. u can cry.. tears are ok, a sign of mercy in heart.. but you don't wail and tear ur clothes.. beat urself etc.. that is wrong... it is not frm our way...
shared it coz u'll shortly see some ppl in the streets doing exactly that... beating themselves etc... which is against islamic teachings.. and also against common sense.

okay thanks..

does it go for the matam as well, during muharram.. :S

that was the point..
besides, if you cry for some1's death then it is more fitting that you do all that for death of Prophet S.A.W... can we have a bigger loss than him..?
or if u cry for a shaheed then it is more fitting that u cry for martyrdom of umar, uthman and Ali R.A....better men... but none of the sahaba at that time did so.. so it defies common sense and Islam...!

n we learn frm sahaba coz:
The Prophet (S.a.W) said in a saheeh hadeeth: “The best of mankind are my generation (or my century), then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then there will come a people who will not care if their testimony comes before their oath or vice versa (i.e., they will not take such matter seriously).” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, Muslim and al-Tirmidhi).

Aoa wr wb....do you know the significance of the beating of the chest during muharram? as far as i know....it is a gesture of awakening oneself to see the truth, this is why people do matam......others misunderstand the concept and hurt themselves and become violent.....the awakening means one has to see what Imam Husayn sacrificed for Islam in Karbala....

ws wr wb,
but how is it a part of Islam..?!! does the quran not say "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion." (5:3)
where in Quran or authentic ahadith u find doing matam..? don't u know complete means it has everythng.. no need to add stuff it's perfect...! if u believe Islam is perfect then no need fr matam..

plus if there was any good in it our prophet S.A.W wd surely have told us about it and wd have done it..... rather he said:
"...Beware of newly invented things, for every innovation (bid’ah) is a going astray.” (Ahmad, abu Dawood)
