    If it was copper CuO would be formed. Yes BUT there wouldn't be any dehydration and the alcohol won't become an alkene since copper DOES NOT catalyse dehydration. Copper Oxide is not a possibility.

    We never decomposed the alcohol. I suggested the catalyst X underwent decomposition due to the heat which was provided with it. The alcohol only underwent dehydration NOT decomposition.

    Even if it was Al2O3, where did CuO come from? There is no copper in the whole setup! Saying the black solid was CuO would mean that either X had copper in it (which is not true) or the alcohol had copper in it(which sounds retarded. Therefore CuO being the black solid is impossible.     The reaction itself was dehydration. No combustion occurred, the black solid formed due to decomposition because of the heat. It should be noted that Catalysts remain unchanged during a reaction so the alcohol had nothing to do with it. Does anyone know the products for the decomposition of SiO2?

    It should, since the composition of Pumice is as follows: %SiO2 : 53.50 %Al2O3 : 10.75 %CaO : 3.78 %MgO : 1.95 %Fe2O3 : 3.22 %K2O : 3.15 %Na2O : 1.60 pH : 6.5 I myself wrote CaO. Carbon responsible for the black solid? Seems probable... CuO however has got nothing whatsoever to do with...

    Wrong. X was pumice which is SiO2. The black thing was whatever compound is formed when SiO2 decomposes (that was because of the heat if you didn't take care to look). The apparatus can be found on page 340 of the OCR book. P.S CuO? Sorry to burst your bubble but not possible.
