explain why a racemic mixture of optical isomers has no effect on the plane polarised light.

The racemic mixture has equal quantities of both + and - enantiomers. Since they rotate light in opposite directions, the nett effect is nothing.
(LIke half the solution turns it thru x degree clockwise BUT the other half turns it through x degrees anticlockwise so no overall effect.)
