Hi,

I'd be starting my A level at the end of August this year. I need some help regarding choosing some subjects, and i have a couple of questions I'd be really thankful to anyone who can help me.

My first question: Is it necessary to study chemistry if you wanna go for Computer sciences in the future? The college i am applying for is offering us to choose from three compulsory groups, 1: pre medical 2: pre engineering 3: humanities. As i wanna go for Computer sciences later, i'll of course choose the pre engineering group. But the three compulsory subjects in this group are physics, chemistry and maths. Computing as a subject is offered as a separate choice. So, i am confused about whether we can skip chemistry if i wanna do computer sciences later in my life or not.

My second question is about the number of subjects i should take. Right now, including the three compulsory subjects from the pre engineering group, i want to choose the following subjects too. Computing, English language and History. My question is whether it is a good idea to take a total of 6 subjects? I wanna study history just because i am interested in the subject, and might not sit for the actual A level history exam.

Thanks in advance :)

I would suggest you take Physics, Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Computing - This is the perfect combination for anyone who wants to study Computer Science in the future. Don't waste your time studying English and History. If you want to take 6 subjects then you can take ICT or a business subject like Accounting. Chemistry is not required for Computer science applicants in UK Universities, I don't have idea about other countries

Thanks very much for the reply :)

So, does a grade in A level english has no effect on university admissions in UK, US, or other countries?

By the way, i want to pursue history as an interest and not as a subject, because i love it.

I've heard that A level math is really hard. Seeing that i did not take add maths in O level, won't the further math subject pose a big problem for me in A level?

Once again thanks for your reply :)

Language subjects (especially English) are given credit no matter what career you pursue. So if you're good in English, you should go for it! I don't think it will be feasible for you to take further maths if you have nt done addmaths in O levels. You can study History as your hobby but make sure it does not affect your main A level subjects....... I suggest you should also take Chemistry as an A level subject because if you want to got to the States you need to sit for SAT 2. If you have A level chemistry SAT 2 will be easy for you to handle.
