AOA every one. Here is another question that I was unable to do from SETS. Hope someone can help.
Q. In a certain class, 30 pupils took an examination paper in English and an examination paper in Chinese. In the English paper, 22 pupils passed and 8 failed. In the Chinese paper, 18 pupils passed and 12 failed. Given that x pupils passed both papers and 3 failed both papers, illustrate the results by drawing a Venn diagram and then find x.
My answer looks like this:
Number of pupils who failed= 8+12-3 = 17.
Number of pupils who passed = 30-17 =13.
=> (22-x)+ x + (18-x) = 13.
=>x= 27.
However, once again my answer is incorrect. The book says the correct answer would be 13. How come? I want answers folks, quick answers!

if 3 students failed both papers, then 30-3=27 pupils have passed at least 1 paper.
(22-x)+x+(18-x)=27
=>x=13
