It means being selfish and only thinking about your benefits and betterment. Nowadays the world is full of meanies. So we should expect little from people these days :) They've lost respect for others. Whether it is as a means of promoting our groups, or ourselves, we tend to be more aggressive when our self-worth has been challenged and we are not feeling particularly positive about ourselves. When our self-esteem is threatened, we are more likely to compare ourselves to people we think are worse off than us, to see other people as having more negative traits, to degrade people who aren't members of our groups, and to become more directly aggressive towards people in general.
When you insult or criticize someone else, it may say more about how you are feeling about yourself than the other person.
Insecurity over ourselves drives much of the cruelty in the world.

The mean people are usually the ones who are also forever alone and anti social. They have minimum idea about a person's feelings. Or, they are the ones who don't want too see you happy and as a result try to lower your self esteem and confidence by making you feel bad about yourself. If you know someone who is mean, his words shouldn't be taken seriously.

Being mean has nothing to do with being forever alone and anti social. It is actually just a defence mechanism for most people. They are mostly suffering from an inferiority complex, and this is their way of dealing with it.
Most mean people you meet are those who are trying to escape from something that reminds them of a certain fear or anxiety. The bully is a person who might have been raised in an environment that made him feel helpless and so to prevent anything from reminding himself of that fact he takes the initiative and bully others to feel in control. Those who harshly criticize you or judge you for no reason might be the people who feel inferior and who try to safeguard themselves by devaluing others in order to feel superior.
And although this is really wrong, instead of hating them , try to help them and reason with them. There is always a reason for people's behaviour. And maybe all they need is a listening ear and a few words of comfort. :)

Anyways I believe in this

People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered.
Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.

People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for a few underdogs anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People really need help but may attack you if you do help them.
Help people anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you have anyway.”
