yes thats true. on the surface of the membrane has glycoproteins(protien molecules to which carbohydrate chains are attached) and glycolipid(lipid molecules to which carbohydrate chains are attached).
these carbohydrate chains act like antibody and recognises any foreign molecule(antigen) around.
these chains also attach themselves to the hormone needed by the cell.
