Hi,
I have a question...
In one of the pastpapers, it is asked to write the 3 equations of contact process. starting from the combustion of sulphur...so what do you think will be the first three equations?

according to me,

1)combustion of Sulphur in oxygen
2)sulphur dioxide and oxygen to produce sulphur trioxide
3) sulphur trioxide with sulphuric acid to produce oleum...

but these equations do not go to the final product sulphuric ACID!
what to do?

If u look at the mark scheme or book u'll find the answer is

1) sulphur reacting with oxygen to give sulphur dioxide
2) SO2 with oxygen to form sulphur trioxide
3) then SO3 with water to form sulphuric acid

the second step can also be written as the formation of oleum instead
of formation of trioxide..

our sir told this: :idea:
1st: S + O2 -------> SO2
2nd: 2SO2 + O2 <====> 2SO3
3rd: SO3 + H2O -------> H2SO4

he also told tht this is not done practically coz its a very vigorous reaction :eek:
i hope tht helps =)

The third equation is not possible since the reaction is very exothermic...btw I solved it...thankyou so much!
