what is molality?

"The molality of a solution is defined as the number of moles of a solute dissolved in 1 kilogram of water"
A 1 molal solution has one mole of solute dissolved in one kg of water, two molal solution has two moles of solute dissolved in one kg of water and so on

Basically mol/kg

How much solid do we add? I am thinking we have to reach a saturation point? how do we know when it is reached?
