u silly ppl i will show u 3 methods to do it and get the ans without getting muddled up

1) 1=8-12+4-C
1-8+12-4=-C (Bring all the numbers to one side and keep the unknown in the other side)
1+12-8-4=-C (Do the addition first according to BODMAS)
13-12=-C...... (Simplify)
1=-C .............(Change all signs)
C=-1

2) C=8-12+4-1 (re-arrange, leaving the unknown +ve)
C=8+4-12-1.... (BODMAS)
C=-1

3) ~ THe- EASIEST-OF- ALL-METHODS~
1=8-12+4-C (8+4=12
.....................12-12=0)
1=-C
C=-1

There is one small and simple mistake with your calculation. Even I got baffled to why you got 9 and then I realized the mistake was pretty silly.

you said 1 = 8 -12 +4 - C (ok)

C= 8-12+4-1 (this is fine too)

but -12+4 = -8 and not -16

so this step : =8 - 16 -1 (is sadly wrong)

its actually = 8 -8 -1

C=-1

I hope that clears up why 9 even came up when it actually can't!

And can u believe no one else saw that???
