Paper 1 and 2 or 3 in case of o level practicals or atps and 4 or 5 in case of alevels
these are different variants of the syllabus and their aims are different.
E.g. P1 is usually always MCQs in case of sciences and commerce. The aim for mcqs are basic understanding and concept.
p2 consists of structured questions which requires explanation in detail
p3 is usually practical in case of sciences or questions which requires different explanation like in maths a levels
p4 is usually alternative of practical which doesnt require physical work like in p3. It asks a student about how they will apply this in their practical life.
p5 (alevels) requires even deeper analysis and understanding

Consider variants as categories of subjects.
e.g. English has 2 papers : P1 is directed writing and essays. p2 is comprehension
pak studies p1 is history and p2 is geography
islamiat p1 is related to surahs and God and p2 is related to Hadis and Holy Prophet PBUH
Physics a levels have p1 p2 p3 p4 p5

These are paper variants.
These have the same syllabus. If you are going to prepare, do both of them and there isnt really a big difference between them. Variants are good for revision
