Distinction in exams?

Can anyone explain this? How does one achieve this and what are its benefits?

First you'll have to take at least seven IGCSE exams, under these groups:

• Group I: Languages - at least two exams - eg English and French
• Group II: Humanities and Social Sciences - eg geography
• Group III: Sciences - eg biology
• Group IV: Mathematics - eg additional mathematics
• Group V: Creative, Technical and Vocational - eg ICT

the seventh subject can come from any group. you can take more if you like.

now, you must pass all these exams. (C-A*) Doing this automatically gives you the ICE Award. If you get Mostly As & A*, but maybe a couple of Bs, you'll get Distinction.

It's just a way of congratulating you on your success. Distinction is the Highest level. There's also merit and pass.

Obviously when applying to schools / employers and they see your distinction, they'll hold you in higher regard.

No they won't
Don't allow yourself to be dictated to about which subjects you take. Just focus on getting A*s and As in your subjects – universities don't care, Oxbridge don't care, and employers certainly won't either.
The ICE is just to say you have a 'broad education' – in practice, means absolutely nothing.
