So I made this for people to clear up their doubts here. I would first start off, can anyone briefly explain population pyramid, old flood plain and new flood plain?

yes, but mine doesn't explain properly

A Population Pyramid is a graph that shows the age-sex distribution of a given population. it displays percentages and shows what portion of people fall into each cohort and is for a specific area over a given period of time

for the other two ques check this: http://www.answers.com/Q/What_is_old_flood_plain

while the book says: the active flood plain is a narrow strip of land on both sides of the rivers, it is locally called as bet or khaddar land. This area of land is inundated every year. and at the end rainy season, the land is marked with dry and braided channels rich in alluvium….and then u need to know the important features of this plain

and the old flood plain is simply the area of land found besides the active flood plain, which has comparably less alluvium soil than the active plane and is called old because not much of the river reaches it and it remains flooded for lesser time and has fewer features and then after this area of land comes the scarp and the n the alluvial terrace ( which is the highest and the safest region and if you r from Punjab its highly likely your house is constructed on an alluvial terrace)

Also,
1. Can someone please explain why land cools more quickly than water, Ik that water has more specific heat capacity, but what does that have to do with "cooling".
2. Why is heavy rain not effective for crops in monsoon and why light showers are beneficial, please explain briefly.
3. What is the meaning of the term "Seepage from unlined canals" ?

explain why land cools more quickly than water,

well, it is because of the specific heat capacity and the heat capacity is a measure of the amount of heat necessary to raise the temperature of one mole of a pure substance by one degree Kelvin, and when a substance has a high heat capacity it take time to heat up and take time two cool down ( further down the line the cooling and heating of substance depend of the spaces and the kinetic energy of molecules), the land , therefore as compared to the water heats and cools faster , because water has one of the highest heat capacities of all substances. It takes a great deal of heat energy to change the temperature of water compared to metals. The large amount of water on earth means that extreme temperature changes are rare on Earth compared to other planets. Were it not for the high heat capacity of water, our bodies (which also contain a large amount of water) would be a subject to a great deal of temperature variation

Why is heavy rain not effective for crops in monsoon and why light showers are beneficial, please explain briefly.

The heavy rain will flood the land as the soil no longer can retain the extra amount of water the nutrients will be washed away the roots will lose grip because the soil becomes soft and swampy. Crops sensitive to rain e.g cotton crops will be completely destroyed. The light showers will give the land and the plants time and space so that it be able to effectively absorb max water and the transpiration process too will go smooth

What is the meaning of the term "Seepage from unlined canals" ?

Unlined canals are not constructed but are naturally made and with loose embankments, the vertical ground on both sides of the canal is permeable and it is through it that the water seeps , that is it gets absorbed… the seepage further causes water logging and salinity and much of the irrigation water is lost
