Which subject are you talking about.. and is it Alevels or IGCSE...
I can link you to the specific subject threshold count

Cause it differs subject to subject, and each paper carries a certain percentage. For example P3 50%

I have not seen the November 2011 thresholds but let me give my explanation based on what I understand and the thresholds for June 2011. On the published thresholds there is the phrase,

The A* threshold is calculated using the difference between A and B as a starting point. “

In the June paper those that did 11, 21, 31, 41, and 51 had as a threshold for an A a total of 199 out of 260 (77%) and for a B 176 out of 260(68%). Take the difference between the two thresholds, divide it by two and add it to the lower threshold to give 187. The upper limit for an A* is a perfect score-260 points. Take the difference between 260 and 187, divide it by 2 and add it to the starting point which is 187 to give 223. The threshold for an A* would be 223 or 86%. This seems rather low but an A only required 77% so it seems reasonable.

I think this is how the calculation is done but I am not completely sure. I have never found anything in the syllabuses that said how grades are calculated by Cambridge.

I divided by two because I couldn´t think of anything else to do with the difference between the two grades.

However these calculations are not relevant because for the first time they give the thresholds for A* with the June grades. My number does not agree with theirs. Happily the threshold is even lower than what I calculated above. However one mystery remains. If you add up the points for all the components they total 270 and not 260. The AS components add up to 140 and the A2 to 130. This doesn´t make sense because that would mean the AS components would be worth more than the A2. Yet the grade thresholds contain this statement.

The maximum total mark for this syllabus is 260 for A Level and 130 for AS Level”
At this point I quit. It is a waste of time trying to figure out how many points are needed for an A* even after you have all the thresholds and there is no way to calculate how much is needed in advance of the exams.
