The hydroxyl group of neopentyl alcohol is protonated by H2SO4. Loss of water yields a very unstable primary carbocation. The shift of a CH3 group gives a tertiary carbocation. Loss of a proton from this will give the alkene 2-methyl-2-butene.

(CH3)3CCH2OH --H+--> (CH3)CCH2OH2+ --(-H2O--> (CH3)3CCH2+ ---> (CH3)2C=CH2CH3

what? you are saying this to me?
Yes. I thought It wouldn´t react since there is no hydrogen adjacent to the carbon with the OH and so unsaturation wouldn´t be possible. Could you explain me question number 21, Paper 1, May/June 2010 Variant 2 please. Would really appreciate it.
