17^2 =x^2 +(x+7)^2
289=x^2+(x^2+14x+49)
240=2x^2 + 14 x
2x^2 + 14x - 240=0
divide all by 2
x^2 +7x - 120=0
ii) (x+15) (x-8)
iii) x=-15 or x=8 (we reject -15 because the length cant be in negative)
iv)8+7 =15
b) i) same are ====> (3x)*(2x-1)=(2x+3)*(2x+3)
6x^2-3x=4x^2+6x+6x+9
2x^2-15x-9=0
ii) correct to 2 d.p (then you should use formulae)
and then you reject the -ve answer =))
