18(a)i: draw a dotted line up to the graph from hor. axis at t=7. Put your pencil at the point where the two lines intersect. Place a ruler below the pencil, aligning it until the ruler only touches the curve at one point, where the pencil is. Hold down the ruler and draw a straight line, as long as you can make it within the graph squares.

18(a)ii: Using the tangent you just drew as a hypotenuse, draw the largest right-angled triangle you can, using dotted lines for the remaining 2 sides. The acceleration or gradient is the height of the triangle divided by the base, or h/b. How close you get to the accepted answer depends on how well you drew the tangent.

18(b): Given car travels at max speed for 13s. Draw horizontal dotted line from speed=60m/s. From graph, max speed is 60m/s; .: distance travelled = 60 x 13 = 780m

21(a): Open your compass to the full length of AB, more or less. Place needle end of compass at A, make two short curves around 60 degrees from line AB, on both sides. Repeat at point B. If necessary, lengthen the curves so that they intersect. Using the straight edge, draw a straight line THROUGH the two intersections.

21(b): Midpoint is the intersection of the two straight lines. Co-ordinates are (x,y) = (4,2)

21(c): Easiest method for determining equation for line AB is to use gradient method.

m = (y1-y2)/(x1-x2) or y-y1 = m(x-x1)

I prefer the second equation, so, using points A and B:

y-8 = [(8+4)/(1-7)](x-1)
y-8 = (12/-6)(x-1)
y = -2x+2+8
y = 10-2x
