yeah its like the one which came in may/jun 2010 p23 Physics!
there's nothing to worry abt
M means mega, so its equal to 10^6
and e is the charge on an electron which is 1.6*10^-19
and V is just a constant, u dont take this into consideration :)

V= volt
its mega electron volt
its just another way to state energy!

MeV is MegaElectronVolt
To convert to eV multiply with [10^6]
To convert it into Joules multiply eV with [1.6x10^(-19)]

(i)an alpha particle + hydrogen will be formed..
(ii)Alpha particles must have the same energy initially.
(iii)1.1Mev=(1.1x10^4)x(1.6x10^9)=1.76x10^-13.
Applying K.E=1/2mv^2
1.76x10^-13=1/2x1.66x10^-27xv^2
(where 1.66x10^-27 is the unified mass constant)...
so by completing all the calculations the final result is 7.3x10^6 m/s.
Hope u understood it.. :) :)

b)i) alpha particles are nuclei of helium, therefore mass=4, proton number = 2. just balance the numbers on both sides so the other dash is mass= 1, proton = 1, which could be a proton or hydrogen nucleus, but they're not asking u what it is...

ii) 1. i don't get this part so can't help... the marking scheme says the alpha particle has some KE initially... kinda makes sense but dunno how exactly :/
2. 1 MeV = 1.6 x 10^-13 J
1.1 MeV = 1.76 x 10^-13 J
then substitute in the kinetic energy formula:
1.76 x 10^-13 J = 1/2 m v^2
remember to multiply the atomic mass of alpha particle with the unified atomic mass constant to get real mass
you'll get the answer 7.3 x 10^6 m/s
