Dear Freinds,
I am taking A-Level -----Chemistry, Physics, Maths (Statistics and Pure mathematics)...
currently in AS..
My Ambition is to become a successful engineer...

My PROBLEM __ I am confused on what engineer to become..
there are so many different types of engineers..
chemical, mechanical, aeronautical and so on..

My Second Question: Do i need to take Computing in AS in order study engineering in an university?

I need an expert's advice on this... Who is at the peak of his education in AS or in A2..

take your time in selecting which areas of ur study you are really good in as well as those you are interested in

If you like chemistry and are able to score easily, then chemical could be a wise choice
if not acing the chemistry but only organic, then petroluem can be the one.
draw up a priority list and
this way keep simplifying ...
also u must not forget the current market demands for ur selected choice as well ur future prospects like where u wanna live, your family background and etc

man for me whenever you choose a type of engineering go with what you like and trust me you succeed, and as soon as you finish your bachelor degree you might go for masters i guess but in my opinion i guess go with 2 years of MBA(Management business Adminstration) cuz business is ruling the world you know :p

I've finished my A Levels last year and I haven't come across a single university that needs computing for engineering. The only possibility is that it might be required for software engineering or computer engineering in some university but I haven't seen any such university.

The choice for the type of engineering really depends on your interests, I'll try to give you a basic idea about some of the engineering fields:

Civil Engineering - Its all about the study of construction. Its similar to architects except architects make the design of the building and you have to make it scientifically viable by using the right materials and right construction techniques. Its one of the engineering fields that will always have a demand no matter how far ahead the technology goes because we're always going to build structures.

Electrical and Electronics Engineering:
Electrical - Mostly about power, transformers and all other stuff you'll most probably end up working in a company that provides electricity.
Electronics - This is all about how devices like home appliances, computers and other machinery works at the level of circuits and stuff. I personally have chosen this field because that's what I like and its a very creative field. This field can provide you a huge selection of jobs and the demand for these, specially electronics is quite high.
*Both of these are considered among the highest levels of engineering fields along with Mechanical Engineering.

Computer Engineering - Its a relatively new field and is merely a mixture of computer science and Electronics Engineering. You use the knowledge of electronics, software design, and hardware-software integration to develop computer systems. It used to have a very high demand but now it's very common and not as much demanded in industry as before.

Mechanical Engineering - It is one of the oldest fields of engineering and still in very high demand. You basically study about physics and materials science to design, maintain and analyse mechanical systems. Frankly speaking it is a very wide field and has good job opportunities.

Mechatronics Engineering - It is one of the newest fields developed for engineering and is quite interesting to a lot of students just because of its nature to combine Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. You can't really say you are getting a dual degree but it's a selective mixture of both engineering to fulfill the demands of industries like robotics. I'm not really sure about the job aspects of this field but its relatively a very new field and doesn't provide a broad range of job types but remember, many countries which are still developing have very low interest into fields like robotics and that could mean very low amount of jobs, also not every university teaches this course.

These are the most common fields of engineering, there are more like Systems Engineering, Materials Engineering, Industrial Engineering, etc. but you will have to search about them yourself :)

Finally I would just say plan what you're going to do, decide where you potentially want to work although your choices can change with time, this way at least you get some goals and criteria for your education. Also remember to start searching for universities in the summer after your AS, I know it's very early but trust me you will be quit happy that you started searching so early because its a very tough job and university intakes are only once or twice a year, which means if you miss them then next year.

I have heard that chemical engineering involves mostly physics and very basic chemistry like calculating moles. The fourth or fifth modules of the degree will be the one focusing on chemistry. I'm considering this an option because you can branch into mechanical from chemical engineering, and my best subject out of the sciences and math is probably physics.
