There is mixing of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood. The body receives the mixture, whose oxygen is not sufficient. This makes the heart pump harder to provide the body with what it needs. It may lead to an enlarged heart, and heart failure if not corrected.

Firebender's answer is good, you should also add this.

When performing activities that require large amounts of oxygenated blood such as exercising or sprinting, the heart cannot provide it therefore patients with the hole cannot take part in strenuous activities.
