lossy compression is a compression technique that involves discarding some of the data which is generally undetected by human senses .this technique results in the loss of quality of the original file (since some of the data,though imperceptible to humans is lost)therefore this type of compression may not be used where we need EXACTLY the same data after compression,as for word documents.it's widely used for compression of music and video.REMEMBER files that are compressed this way can never be decompressed
lossless compression is a compression technique that reduces a particular file's size without discarding ANY information.this type of compression stores the repeating units or similar units(set of information/data)once only and the number of times it is being repeated(known as index).Files compressed this way need to be decompressed before they can be used/understood
