I know that when H2 or 02 is released, they will ask us to add a compound in a boiling test tube and heat it. Then, we need to put our hand or a lid on top of the tube to collect the gas, and then we need to perform the "splinter"test.
With H2- pops with a lighted splint
With 02- relights with glowing splint Therefore, we can identify whether the gas evolved is 02 or H2.

But my problem is: I have not, even once, carried out such "splinter"test. I dont know what are we actually supposed to do.. what is "splinter"??? n what does "pops up" or "glowing splint" refer to????

I've got my exam tomorrow itself. please help.
please!!

Splinters refers to wooden sticks much like match sticks but should be bit bigger in size.
Pop refers to sound. For H2, u will need to lit up a split and, as I did, insert it inside the test-tube. If hydrogen is present, the fire will extinguish. When it does so, it often creates a sound which is described as pop sound. U might also see that the test-tube is filled with smoke. But the important thing is that the fire will extinguish.

For O2, first u lit up the split and then after few seconds, blow off the fire. U will see that the splinter is still burning and this is referred as glowing split. When u insert this inside a test-tube with oxygen inside, the splitter will relight up again. In easy words, catch fire again.
