man listen.....for 1 spring the extension is e.....right???so if u connect 2 springs in parallel extension decreses by half...
if u connect 4 springs extension becomes 1/4....... got it???..

thanks, but i don't really get it! :/

I thought each spring extends by 0.5e, so the TOTAL extension is 0.5e + 0.5e ?
Am I interpreting the question wrong?

Thanks for the diagram and all, but my qs is:

how is the TOTAL e in number 2, 0.5e ?

Isn't the extension in EACH spring 0.5e ? That would give 0.5e + 0.5e = e

the load is divided in each spring, thats why each of them will extend by 0.5 e
the springs are connected in parallel, so the total extension will be 0.5 as they are stretching TOGETHER!
they dont want the total extension of each spring, they want the total extension of the arrrangement!!! so it'll be 0.5

as in series u take frac n in parallel u add dem up
