The temperature of the piece of metal from the boiling water is 100 degrees.

It is placed in a cup of water. It's temperature is still 100 degrees.

At the end of the experiment the temperature of the water is 22.9 degrees, so the temperature of the metal must also be 22.9 degrees.

100 (initial) - 22.9 (final) = 77.1 (change)

To be honest I don't think the question is very clear and I had a lot of problems with it when it came in a test our physics teacher gave us. They never tell you that all the heat has been transferred by the time the experiment has concluded, but they expect you to assume that.
