What is Van da waals force? and wats the diff in galvanising and sacrificial protection? :Sany chem doubts?
What is Van der Waals force? and what's the difference between galvanizing and sacrificial protection? :S
Galvanizing by definition is covering a metal with another metal which does not corrode, or at least, corrodes less. Galvanizing iron generally refers to coating it with zinc because it is more corrosion-resistant than iron (despite being a more active metal) because its oxide, ZnO, adheres to the surface of the metal.
Sacrificial protection involves protecting the iron with a sacrificial anode made of a more active metal such as magnesium, which will oxidize instead of the iron. The iron will not be oxidized because the iron ions (cations, specifically.) will be reduced by the more active metal anode. When the sacrificial anode is depleted, the iron will start to corrode.
thx a lotvan der woals forces of attraction is the weak attraction between the layers of the 3 strong covalent bonds in graphite. these delocalized electron are able to carry a charge.
galvanizing is electroplating the object with usually zinc, but scarificial protection doesnt involve the iron/steel to be plated only the more reactive one should be in contact with iron, so sacrificial protection it doesnt involve electricity
ohhkayee got it Thankss once againNp
its basically just the name given to the force between the layers of graphite. as each carbon atom is bonded with 3 strong covalent bonds in a 2-d hexagonal layer and in between these layers is one weak carbon covalent bond and electron are able to move. this space between the two layer is called vander woals forces of attraction
check this out it might helpwhat topices i need to study for paper 6
