You may do so if you are not taught any subject(s) in your school by the teacher. However some subjects cannot be given privately as they involve practical paper or course work like ICT. For each subject you can find its availability to private candidates in its syllabus. So you appear in your exams privately if you have studied the subject on your own i.e private lessons and it is available to private candidates.
