look.... ICT is relating to how technology is used by organisations and its impact on the society.. the practical part involves word, access, excel, mailmerge and stuff like that.. the subject is very easy and is vocational.. they dont explain how the technology works and doesnt include any programming.. Applied ICT should be for people who want to know how to use the computer but do not want to specialise in this field.
Computing is more complicated and must be taken in a registered centre.. a computing coursework and a project is required.
I took Applied ICT A Level in may/june 2011 and im expecting an A* or an A... i cant help much in computing but usually if math AL requires 5 hours of studying a day then ICT AL requires 1 hour a day.... last year many students in my school got A*s in ICT AL but failed to get similar results in other subjects.
and even computing AL is vocational (but not as much as ICT) and is not needed for students aiming to specialise in computer science or computer engineering as these use mathematics and logic to prove why programming works.. instead of just learning advantages and disadvantages of using a keyboard or a mouse.

yeah, u can really study less than other subjects and still achieve a good grade in AICT
but careful AICT sometimes appears too easy and boring, this is when u will do bad
that is what happened in my centre unlike ahmedtk's one..... most students are busy with other subjects and then did not take AICT seriously enough 'cause "its easy". the result of this that most of the students scored C or less, some reaching E.
the best part of the subject is practical which allows u to score marks easily and the worst part is the theory where u need to answer 80 marks in just 75 minutes :(

Computer is recommended for people going in that particular field. It is in depth study and includes programming and other stuff .. For software engineers or IT specialisations..
AICT is highly recommended as it is mostly practical and teaches u the know how of spreadsheet and database programs. Computers are a necessity in every field now, and if u are going for anything accounting related, AICT helps a lot.. When u get a job, u'll be easily able to navigate a computer and make complicated reports/sheets as an accountant..
Even if u are going in a totally unrelated field.. AICT is helpful if u can manage it. Becuase, as i said before.. The basics it teaches are necessary for any business/job.

in short, computer goes into details of how things work, AICT just teaches u how to use em

the practical exams which are paper 2 and 4 are really easy and just assess the skills rather than knowledge .. the each practical paper weighs 30% and each theory paper weighs 20% so 60% is for practical and 40% is for theory....so its really easy to get the 60% of the practical assessment
for the other 40%... the theory exams have the most difficult time pressure in all CIE subjects in which the minority of the candidates manage to finish the thoery exams ... in my theory exams i left around 11 marks in paper 12 and 13 marks in paper 32... but the threshold is quite low... around 46 out of 80
i still think that AICT AL is an easy subject

Haven't studied ICT but i just took the exams for AS Computing and I'd like to say that if you aren't interested in working in the computing field in the future don't take it. Go for ICT it seems more practical then computing judging by other people's posts. You need real interest for computing. 75 % of the people just took it for fun and suffered a lot in the end.

for computing AL, it must be taken through a centre, but for AICT it can be taken privately... it wont really differ because u should do some practical work on ur PC at home ...
