1) - The Ottoman Empire contained many religious buildings and places which the Muslims feared would not be well kept by the Europeans if they took over the lands, so they started the Movement to keep those lands under Muslim control
-The Khilafat was a symbolic, historical and important post for Muslims worldwide. It had originated from the time of the Prophet(S) and it was going to be a great blow to the Muslim culture if it was abolished. So the movement was started to protect the khilafat.
- The Ottoman empire was the largest Muslim Empire in the world and was a show of the Muslim strength and their important postion. The Muslims feared that all the lands would be taken by the Europeans and the Ottoman Empire would be left small and weak. To stop this from happening, started the Movement

2) - In 1913, Muslims made Self Rule one of their aims. This was also the aim of the Congress and it brought the 2 parties closer together. When they realized they had the same objectives, they decided to make joint demands.
- Uptil 1916, the Indians had little to no say in how their country was run. Despite demands, the British ignored them. They decided that they only way to get the British to listen was to make joint demands.
- In the first decade of the 20th century, there had been a strong rivalry between the Hindus and the Muslims. This had often led to violence and strained the relationship of the two communities. The Pact would help to bring them closer.
- Some of the leaders like Jinnah from ML and Mahajan from Congress had a strong belief that co-operation between Congress and ML was necessary for success. Therefore, they set up the Lucknow Pact.

- Britain was at war. Congress felt that they could exploit the British by creating unrest it India. Since Britain was already in a difficult position, it would be forced to comply to Indian demands.
- Despite several political reforms, the Indians still had little say in how their country was run. Due to this, discontent had grown over the years and now the Indians wanted Dominion status and complete control over the political affairs of India.
- The British had refused to leave India because it was under the threat of Japanese invasion, who were expanding towards India. However, Gandhi realized that if the Brits left, there would be no threat from the Japanese and India would be safe. Therefore, the British should be made to leave. He tried to do this by starting the Quit India Movement.
