I am planning to give the exam of Sociology in this Oct-Nov 2013 Session!
People said its very easy and all.. Doesn't seem so by looking at the thickness of the book.
I bought that Ken Brown Book.. It seems lengthy!
So how should i start preparing?
Should i just read the whole book?
What is the paper pattern?
And any tips for it?
HELP ASAP. Thanks!

Sociology is a subject associated with your common sense, the most general subject and the easiest indeed. I would recommend you to start from the first chapter, "The Introduction" and focus a lot on the second chapter, i.e sociological methods (This chapter carries the highest marks in exams) As you have a lot of time, read the whole book like a novel. Understand it since you do not need to memorize facts except chapter 2. The thresholds are normally extremely low so A* is easily attainable. Check out the paper pattern yourself, it comprises of definitions, advantages, disadvantages, opinions and examples connected to various sociological institutes. However, there is a wide range of choice so the exam turns out to be a piece of cake :D

Thickness does not matter when the context is easy. Sociology becomes easy when you start taking interest. The first two chapters are very important, of the seven left, some are accessed in paper 1 and some in paper 2 and there is a lot of choice so you can skip some topics if you feel but in that case do the ones you are preparing to the best. Since you taking the exam in October session so you have plenty of time to know the paper pattern and you can easily decide what topics to choose.

I don't think it requires any tutions, one can easily study the subject without a teacher.

4 months are enough to cover the syllabus and you can definitely get A* if you would have deep understanding of the subject and cleared concepts.
For Business studies you can use the book of Karen Borington and for sociology you can use the book of Ken's Brown. Syllabus of commerce is completely different from business studies other than the a few topics like business organisations.

I don't know if your questions have been answered or not, cba to read all the replies.

I did, though, see the words 'Ken Browne' stand out in the midst.

I used that book for a day or two (going thru the primary reading). I found it horribly mundane and pointlessly elongated. I used Sociology Alive, by Stephen Moore instead, and it was an excellent book. The book structure, and well, the detail is apropos contrary to the heaps of crap in Browne.

Additionally, I personally left a lot of the topics. I did only enough to meet the requirement (i.e left a bunch of entire topics. Social Stratification and Media off the top of my head.) It's a very easy subject and you can do it in a week and a half let alone 4 months. All the best of luck for this exam. It's a very easy A* given the time you have at hand!

I think the time taken to complete a subject depends on the person's intellectual capabilities.
Some might even find it hard and might not even get an A after studying for a whole year.
While some might finish it in a week or so and get an A*.
But my question is, how many hours a day should one study sociology in order to complete it in one and a half week?

In all honesty, if you have the aptitude for it, even an hour and a half/two hours are enough. The syllabus is elementary stuff. (This assumes you don't do the Social Stratification chapter thoguh. I found it horribly long and super boring). It depends on the level of interest you have in the subject. If you find it boring, no amount of time is enough. (eg. me and EM!) If you find it interesting, even a day is enough to complete P1 topics and another to complete P2 topics. (Yes. I know a lot of people who fall under this. Been there, done that.)

So ''Sociology Alive by Stephen Moore''.. is brief and to-the-point?
I heard about this book for the first time.

I found it very much to the point. Browne was overly detailed, irrelevent and had a lot of things mixed up.
Moore had a more 'on-top' approach, tackling each topic on it's own, and not as an interlinked mesh - in that, describing topics prematurely. Additionally, Moore's book had boxes on the margins highlighting the definitions. I found them super useful when skimming just before my exam (ran outta time to prepare for P2 so had to read the definitions just before the exam for the first time in my life! It'd have been a total disaster with Browne, which is super detailed. Yes, it was a painful experience starting to study for an exam in the PM session after comign out of your AM exam.)

I'll suggest giving it a shot. Check the book, read a few pages and see if you like it. If you do, and think it is a better book than Browne, get it. If not, stick to Browne. I bought the photocopy for like 300 from the Old Book Shops near Iqbal + Anees (Main Mkt)
