the question comes first, followed by my crude solution which doesn't admittedly show strong thinking but does the job. what i dont understand is the yellow underlined parts. why does it say that we have to add the full lenght of the end link and why does it subract 1.2 exactly and then add 1 to the fraction later on? im finding this issue rather confusing so any help would be appreciated..

This is what I get from this:
1.2 is actually the length of the end spring. You don't want to take that length into account because it's one side is always exposed. You only take into account those links that are attched to both ends, ie, the middle links. So you subtract the length of end link, calculate the number of middle links and add 1 end link to it.

hey i still dont understand, and i believe your explanation is flawed. I think by end spring you mean to say the "tongs or clips" that are used to fix/close the necklace into place rite, like a lock kinda thing? if u mean that then the question says that the necklace is broken in such a way that the 2 pieces each feature one of the closing fittings, and the +1 to the fraction IS the additional length of the closing fitting which is indeed part of the length of the necklace because while it may be a clip it is also a kind of link.

and so my question abt the +1 is clarified, but my question about WHY THE -1.2 to 33.2 and 25.2 is NOT. Those lengths are subtracted, but I fail to understand why, and any FURTHER help would be appreciated..ive exhausted my thinking over this one. thanks

PS - for some1 asking for thanks on his sig u seem to have pretty few thanks sent out compared to having in, so either ur a god of helping or u dont thank others much lol

the correct answers are in the red square, and i require some logical explanations for them since my brain has failed me on these...thanks in advance

thanks a lot bro...solved the polygon one btw and this is how its done:

the covered up figure forms for us a QUADRILATERAL - so sum of all angles is 360 and so the unlabeled angles each measure (360-80)/2=280/2=140 {figure is equilateral}
Now formula for total of internal angles is (n-2)x180 where n is the no of sides.
So, (n-2)x180= 140 x n AND n = 9.

Answer E.. but need calculations

This question is about setting up a model. Let us begin by calculating at what time the model begins: [We use the formula distance = (speed x time), abv d=st]

Model begins when R leaves P. R covers 30 km to P in t=d/s = 30/40 = .75 hrs = 45 mins. Then, @P he takes a 15 min break, which make his start time at the model 1 hour from 12 o'clock=1 o'clock.
In the meantime, leaving P@ 10 and till 1, b has traveled d=st = 20x3=60km.

Now, set the model up, based on the fact that you want the diff of distance to be 20 km as - Dr - D b =20km
We know that, Dr = st = 40t & Db = st+60 = 40t+60 [The 60 km is the one he covers since leaving P, and st stands for the distance he covers after the model starts]
Finally, Dr - Db = 20 or 40t - 20t - 60 = 20 and HENCE t = 80/20= 4 hours.
Now, 1:00 +4 hrs= 5 o'clock or 17:00 hrs
