WHAT ARE THE EXPECTED GRADES FOR? WHY ARE THEY TAKEN

I had a query,
why r the expected grades taken by cie,
what do they do with the expected grades,

if my expected grade is low
and I get an A*
will it affect my result ?

so basically why do the cie ask for expected grades?
