quick question though; he's always mentioned alongside abu talib and the question is usually something like, 'what was his importance to the prophet' so is that what i write as an answer?

He was the Prophet's(S) uncle and was so involved in wrestling and other such immoral stuff that he did not notice the rise of Islam. One day someone told him how abu lahab had insulted Prophet(S). He got very angry and immediately went and beat abu lahab up. He then went to Prophet (S) and accepted Islam. Since he was very strong, Muslims now gained confidence, and dared to pray openly. Rest of the stuff has been mentioned above.

- Hazrat Hamza was the uncle of the Holy Prophet, and also a foster brother (being a suckling of Umm-i-Aiman).
- At first he did not accept Islam, but was greatly impressed by the conduct of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
- Moved by an incident in which the Holy Prophet (PBUH) took the insults of Abu Jahl, and accepted Islam
- His acceptance brought great benefits to the Muslims, as he too, like Hazrat Umer was feared and was a fighter and a warrior.
- Led the 1st expedition against the Makkan trade caravans
- Fought in the Battle of Badr and Uhud; in the battle of Uhud, he was killed by Weyshy bin Harb, servant of Hind (daughter of Utba).
- Was given the title of Sayyed al-Shuhada' (the leader of Martyrs)

Hope this helps =)
