whats the logic of refraction of waves

when waves travel from deep to shallow water.what happens?
can any body help me how to draw the diagram to show this

CONSIDER IT AS AN XAMPLE!!!

if u place a glss plate in the tray so that a region of shallower water is created, the wave lenghts of the plane wave shortens on passin 4rm the deep water to the shallower water i.e. (lamda2 is smaller than lamda1). the speed of the waves @ the shallower water izz slower than @ the deeper water i.e ( V2 smaller than V1). the frequence howevr remains unchanged....!!!!!
