what is a fiducial aid? -physics

Can someone explain me what a fiducial aid is? And how is it used?
An additional diagram would be a big help

If i'm right you must be talking about "Using the aid of a Fudicial marker"
This is an an object placed at the mean (middle) position of an oscillating pendulum to ensure that we start and stop the stopwatch at the right time.



In the diagram we are using a pencil as a fudicial marker.

its says in the questions sumtime...but my teacher says if it mostly passes through three to four points in a straight line and the graph aint tht awkward den do a straight line.....when most points are not scattered....i guess
