Ijma` (إجماع)
Literally means “consensus.” It refers to the consensus of the Muslim scholars on a specific matter. Ijma` is divided into two types: “Ijma` jaliy” is when all scholars explicitly agree on a matter. The second type is “Ijma` sukuti,” where a scholar knows of a specific matter and did not speak against it so it is considered a silent agreement.

but was it a sunna?

Sunnah (سنّة)
Literally means the “path.” All the traditions and practices (sayings and actions) of the Prophet Muhammad(S.A.W).

so it was a sunna right? battle of uhud?
badrobot14
badrobot14
so at the time of prophet (S.A.W) if a muslim wanted to ask about a matter of haram and halal etc he would ask the prophet (S.A.W) but after he died, if let's say the sahaba decided upon something among themselves, they did ijma.

I get all that, I did the topic of ijma today, just want to know if it was sunna or not, i wrote that in my mock but my teacher says that its not byr the book says it it, uhud... so is it? :(

Imam al-Shafi`i defines the ijma` (in his Risala)
The adherence of the congregation (jama`a) of Muslims to the conclusions of a given ruling pertaining to what is permitted and what is forbidden after the passing of the Prophet, Peace be upon him.

(according to ibn Taymiyyah the ijma of sahaba is binding i.e. must be followed...)

you are still not getting my point :(

so Ijma basically comes after the time of prophet(S.A.W) although we get hints from the ahadith of prophet (S.A.W) that it is good to hold to.. like the Prophet (SAW) said: “Allaah will not cause my ummah to agree on misguidance.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (2167) and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani

i am sorry, sir bad robot* :D
badrobot14
badrobot14
I don't think it can be called a sunnah coz why would Prophet(S.a.w) need to do consensus to decide an Islamic ruling..?? but after him based on his teachings/sunnah the sahaba and the scholars later did ijma/consens on issues..
