When your laptop’s audio suddenly stops working, it can be both frustrating and disruptive. First, check the basics: ensure the volume isn’t muted, speakers/headphones are properly connected, and the output device is correctly selected in your system’s sound settings. If everything appears normal but you still hear no sound, right-click the speaker icon in Windows and run the audio troubleshooter—this tool often detects and fixes common driver or configuration issues. Next, visit the Device Manager to update, disable/re-enable, or roll back your audio driver; corrupted or outdated drivers are a frequent cause of audio failure. For laptops with Realtek or other integrated audio chips, reinstalling the manufacturer’s specific driver can also restore sound functionality. If you recently installed system updates or new software, consider uninstalling them or using System Restore to revert to a point before the audio stopped working. Lastly, don’t overlook hardware issues: test with external speakers or headphones to determine whether the built‑in speakers are at fault.
